Why Should I Schedule A Pediatric Wellness Exam For My Child

As a parent, especially a parent with young children, there are few things more important to you than the health of your children. In fact, your children’s health may be the most important thing for you. You want them to be healthy, safe, and well on their way to living a long and wonderful life.

That can all start with a pediatric wellness exam.

To ensure that your child’s health is as good as it can be, you need to develop a strong relationship between you, your child, and your pediatrician.

Pediatric care is important for several reasons, not the least of which is your children’s health. By starting your children early visiting doctors, they will develop a trusting relationship with pediatric doctors and that will extend into their adulthood and continued health with annual checkups. Building trust with pediatric doctors will ensure your child does not avoid the doctor when they are an adult.

The first pediatric care visit for your child should come about one week after they are born. This first visit will consist of a general health exam and any screening tests that were not done at the hospital. The pediatric doctor will ask how the baby is feeding, the doctor will also measure and weigh your baby. The doctor may also look for any signs of jaundice.

From this point, you should schedule visits with pediatric doctors for your child at two, four, six, nine and 12 months of age. From one-year-old onwards, you can go in at 18 months, and then every two years from that point until your child reaches their teen years.

A typical pediatric wellness exam is going to include checking blood pressure, vision, hearing, listening to lungs, feeling the abdomen, and looking for any signs of tuberculosis, lead exposure and anemia. Visits later in the child’s life will look for signs of depression and anxiety so those conditions can be managed properly.

There are many benefits to a pediatric wellness exam, or a well-child visit, for your child.

One benefit is that through pediatric care, you will be able to track your child’s development and growth over the course of several visits. You will be able to talk to the pediatric doctors about how your child is coming along physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. Pediatricians can also provide a guide for parents to monitor their child’s development.

Another benefit of pediatric care is that you can speak with the pediatrician not only about your children’s health, but also prevention. You can review strategies to ensure that your child is free from injury, and you can keep your child up to date when it comes to vaccines. You can also address important issues such as sleeping habits, nutrition, and overall physical activity.

A third benefit is the diagnosis of conditions that may not be readily apparent initially. These include the aforementioned depression and anxiety but can also include diagnosing ADHD and learning disorders.

Regular visits with your pediatrician will also include the child doctor monitoring the speech patterns of your child. This will allow the doctor to determine if there is any sort of developmental delay or if there is a disability present. Typically, you will want your child to be screened for developmental delays by the time they are nine months old, and then at the age of two and the age of three.

Before you go for a wellness visit to get pediatric care for your child, make notes on things you have noticed about your child’s health and their development. At the same time, make sure that you have a list of questions to ask the pediatric doctor. Put the most important questions first and plan for another visit if you have quite a few questions. You should also gather as much information as you can to give to your pediatric doctor. Share information you have received from the school, including your child’s individualized Education Program, or any child care they receive so that you can help the child doctor learn as much as possible about your son or daughter.

After the visit is over, keep a to-do list of tips that your doctor provided you with to ensure your child’s continued health.

What is Hypertension?

What are the symptoms?

While many people experience symptoms with hypertension and high blood pressure, others don’t notice any symptoms or changes in their body. That’s why seeing your doctor for regular check-ups is the best way to avoid any long-term irregularities in your blood pressure.

If you’ve been experiencing headaches, nosebleeds, shortness of breath, or dizziness, it’s important that you seek prompt medical attention. Hypertension symptoms typically present when the blood pressure has reached a severely high or fatal stage.

Who is at risk for hypertension?

Some of the risk factors for high blood pressure cannot be changed but it’s important to be aware of them. For example, hypertension can run in your family, so if your parents or other immediate family members have high blood pressure, there’s a chance that you might be prone to it as well.

Age: Unfortunately, getting older can put you at risk for hypertension. The older you get, the more prone you are to high blood pressure readings. Race: In the United States, hypertension affects more African Americans than any other racial background.

Gender: Up until the age of 64, men are more prone to developing hypertension than their female counterparts. But at 65 and older, women are more likely to develop hypertension.

Kidney issues: If you’ve been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, you may also be at risk of developing hypertension.

Can you prevent hypertension?

Even though it can run throughout your family tree and there are several physical factors that put you at risk, there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of developing hypertension.

Exercise: Regularly participating in physical activity is a great way to keep your heart healthy. Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, a weekend hike through the forest, aquasize class at the nearby pool, or a sweaty session at the gym. Staying active will reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure.

A healthy diet: Eating foods that are too high in fat and sodium can put you at risk of hypertension. Making healthy choices when it comes to eating is a simple and effective way to reduce your blood pressure. If you’re following a diet that’s high in sodium, this will cause your blood pressure to increase due to water retention. Adding more foods with potassium into your diet (like bananas!) is an easy way to keep your heart healthy. So next time you’re ordering pizza, be sure to add some vegetables and order a salad on the side.

It’s also important to avoid smoking cigarettes and consuming too much alcohol. Even though drinking a bottle of wine every weekend may feel like the right thing to do, it’s not what your heart needs. Swap wine for water and you’ll be feeling hydrated and healthy.

Maintaining a healthy weight: Carrying around excess weight is not only hard on your joints, it’s also very hard on your heart. If you’re overweight, your body requires more blood to deliver nutrients and oxygen to your issues. This means that your body will increase the amount of blood moving through your vessels, which will then increase the amount of pressure against your artery walls.

Try to stay stress-free: Stress can negatively impact so many of your body’s essential functions like your mental health, fertility, hair, skin, and nail growth, and even your blood pressure. Too much stress can cause your blood pressure to spike while also encouraging some unhealthy habits as many people lean on junk food and alcohol when they are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. When you’re feeling stressed out, it’s best to improve your mood through exercise, spending time with friends or family, and by getting lots of sleep.

How is hypertension treated?

Before a doctor prescribes medication, they will usually recommend making some lifestyle changes first to see if that has a difference on your blood pressure readings. But if maintaining a healthy weight, eating better, managing stress levels, and exercising regularly isn’t making a difference, they may prescribe medication. However, it’s incredibly important to continue on with these healthy habits while you take the medication.

The journey to adoption can be a long one for both the children waiting to be adopted — many waiting on average four years — as well as the adult anxious to fulfill their dreams of parenthood. If you aren’t a current patient, we’ll also do a complete medical history and may order lab tests like blood work to check your glucose and cholesterol levels as well as a tuberculosis test. 

When you arrive for your physical, bring a list of any medications and vitamins you take as well as a list of any specialists you currently see and any reports or records from those specialists. All this data will be compiled to provide a clear picture of your health.

The overarching purpose of the physical is to rule out any critical health conditions that could hinder your ability to provide a stable, safe, and nurturing home to a child through adulthood. 

Important part of the home study and approval process

It’s important to note that if you have serious health issues such as cancer or a chronic condition like diabetes it doesn’t automatically prevent you from adopting. The results of your adoption physical are recorded as a health statement. Once we complete your adoption physical, our providers finalize the required paperwork for you to submit to your adoption agency. This will become a part of the mandatory home study portion of the adoption approval process.

The home study is an assessment of not only the environment or home, but of all the people in that home, including their health, finances, relationships, and everything there is to know about all the people that will be involved in raising the adopted child.

Keep in mind that not all health issues may be perceived as negative when it comes to approving an adoption. Some adoption agencies specialize in placements with couples who have infertility issues, so documentation and health records become that much more important.

#1 Don’t walk barefoot

Remember that picturesque scene about walking barefoot on the beach? Sorry, but that’s really not a good idea. Avoiding walking barefoot altogether is tip #1. Due to your compromised circulation and sense of feeling, even a few minutes walking barefoot could put you at a higher risk of a puncture or cut.  Even a quick jog to the mailbox on the hot driveway could cause blisters on the soles of your feet. Keep your feet covered and protected. They’ll thank you later. 

#2 Choose your footwear wisely

Now that walking barefoot is off the table, let’s take a look at what footwear will best protect your feet. More than anything else, it’s about protection and proper fit. 

Select footwear that’s the correct size. If you haven’t had your foot measured for a while, now is a good time. Make sure the shoe fits well so you can avoid blisters or excessive rubbing. Comfortable closed-toed shoes that protect the soles of your feet and are made of breathable material are ideal. Wearing sandals every so often is all right, but just make sure you carefully check your feet when you take them off. 

#3 Ward off swelling with compression socks

This one is a tough one particularly because of the heat, but if you are prone to foot swelling wear compression socks and prop your feet up as often as possible. Remember that you want to avoid further circulation issues. Compression socks help reduce swelling by promoting an upward flow of blood.

#4 Examine your feet daily

This one is fairly easy since it should already be part of your daily regimen. Do a thorough examination of your feet looking for cracks, cuts, blisters, or any type of broken skin that could turn into an infection. Don’t forget to check the soles of your feet as well as your ankles. 

#5 Moisturize your feet

Apply moisturizing lotion to your feet daily to avoid dry, cracked skin, which can turn into sores or infections. Forget about soaking your feet as you don’t want to risk the overall strength or integrity of your skin. Do you recognize a familiar theme here? First, run your hands under clean water, then add soap. Gently scrub for at least 20 seconds washing between your fingers and under your nails. If clean water isn’t available, hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes are an adequate substitute in a pinch. Don’t forget to avoid contact with people who are coughing or appear to be sick and avoid touching communal surfaces like handrails, doorknobs, and light switches.

Let’s start with a common debate – cold versus flu. So what’s the difference? Although both a cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses, different viruses cause them. Typically the symptoms are similar, but colds are generally milder than the flu and don’t usually result in serious complications like bacterial infections or pneumonia. 

Think of the flu as a cold on steroids. Often, the flu causes a high fever, whereas a cold usually results in a low-grade fever or none at all. 

Influenza occurs year-round

When it comes to the flu, short for influenza, we typically think of flu season as if it has particular dates on the calendar like baseball or fishing season. Although it’s more common in the fall and winter, flu viruses can be transmitted all year long.  

The flu is a respiratory viral infection that affects your nose, lungs, and throat. Since flu symptoms are similar to the common cold, be vigilant in noting what’s going on in your body. Flu symptoms may include: 

Some people also get a fever and additional symptoms like body aches, fatigue, and nausea. 

Don’t wait to see the doctor

If you or your child has had any of these symptoms, it’s time to make an appointment for a sick visit. Keep in mind that the most serious distinction between the flu and a cold is that the flu can develop into serious complications like pneumonia, resulting in hospitalizations and even death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control during the 2018–2019 influenza season, 35.5 million people contracted the flu which not only resulted in more than 16.5 million doctor visits but also 490,600 hospitalizations and 34,200 deaths.

Sick visits get you on the road to feeling better

Getting to the root cause of your illness is the primary reason for a sick visit. No one likes to be sick, but ignoring it by not scheduling a visit with our team will only make you sick longer.
